Aquaponics How To Guide

Generally speaking, aquaponics is a two-way system built to help one nurture fish and plant altogether. Aquaculture and hydroponics are merged together. Aquaponics is the growing of fish and hydroponics is the growing of plants that do not thrive in soil such as in clay balls or in gravel. However, it’s not as simple as it may sound because these two systems undergo a complicated process.

What happens is that plants will allow the recirculation of water while filtering it in the process. Whilst the manure of the fish act as natural fertilizers. Thus, a mini-ecosystem is the outcome. This type of system is conducive for places which have scarce water because the water used in the fish tanks are re-circulated thus water is conserved.

Freshwater fishes are ideal to grow in this man-made ecosystem. You can cut costs in growing fish with this system, either you want it for display or eat them for dinner.

Let’s get into the nuts and bolts of what happens in an aquaponics mini eco system. Firstly, the fish that you grow there extracts manure that fertilizes the plants Then a conversion occurs with the bacteria in the manure- ammonia to nitrites to nitrates. Then your plants would act as a sifter and filters the wastes and produces clean water for your fishes to breathe upon. This is how the system works- fish manure fertilizes the plants, the plants filters the waste in the water and pumps it out again.

So what do you need to be equipped with before setting up your own aquaponics systems?

Firstly, above all, you must choose a fish tank. You must choose a fish tank that has ideally enough space for your fish to swim around and your plants to grow. There should be enough space for oxygenation.

The plants should thrive well in a watery environment, it should adapt to the lack of soil water. Lettuce is one of the best example for this. As you are now aware, this type of system is not applicable to plants that need soil to grow such as potatoes or carrots; this means that you should do some research to what plants that suitable to grow in your man-made ecosystem.

The aquaponics system is basically two units, a pumping unit and a filtering unit that works as one. A break in the unit breaks the balance of the entire system. You need to feed the fish and make sure the plants are well hydrated. Because some water is evaporated in the process. You must do both; feed the fish and maintain the water level so that you can eat fresh fish meat and vegetables.

However, setting up the whole system is not as simple as it seems. If you have no idea about agriculture and plumbing, you might as well call an expert. This is because there are a lot of aspects to consider.

Aquaponics has been adapted by many countries nowadays. This system is very beneficial but it requires work to maintain the system. It’s not easy but you can always learn from the experts. A little inquiry and you’ll be on your way.
